Here is a list of some of the helpful books, websites and magazines I have used. It is a dynamic list, as things go out of print and offline, and new ones come up all the time. I will update it as I can – if you have any to add, please let me know!

BOOKS

Danielson, Cornelia. The Accessible Guide To Florence. Xlibris Corp, 2004. Stunning amount of detail on the accessibility of Florence, including information on neighborhoods, hotels, restaurants, transportation and practical tips. Published in 2004 so somewhat out-of date but nevertheless it is an excellent place to start. Ms. Danielson also runs/ran Barrier Free Travel Services, a tour agency, but its website (www.bftservices.it) seems to have been taken down.

Harrington, Candy. Barrier-free Travel, A Nuts And Bolts Guide For Wheelers And Slow Walkers: 2nd Edition. New York: Demos Medical Publishing, 2005. Fabulous book discussing considerations for air, bus and train travel, accommodations, cruises, travel agents, budgets and more. Ms. Harrington has also written 101 Accessible Vacations, There Is Room at the Inn, and Kids on Wheels, has a website: http://www.barrierfreetravels.com, and publishes an online travel magazine, Emerging Horizons. She is a star.

The Washington Trails Association and Nelson, Dan. Accessible Trails in Washington’s Backcountry: A Guide to 85 Outings. Seattle: The Mountaineers, 1995. A great resource that is sadly out of date. It is still a good starting point, but I hope they publish an update soon!
