Blake Island – Camping!

Blake Island, WA is an island state park in Kitsap Co. located in the Puget Sound west of Seattle, in between Bainbridge and Vashon. It can only be reached by boat. I had the happy opportunity to go camping there with my dad, niece and nephew on a beautiful weekend in late August 2012.

Dad took the kids up in his boat on a Friday, and I met them on the island on Saturday. I took the Argosy over (http://www.argosycruises.com) – they run a variety of cruises on Puget Sound, including one to Tillicum Village on Blake Island, which includes a salmon dinner and a performance about the NW Salish Indians. For half-price, you can get a round-trip boat ride with no food or dancing. A word about the trip – it was accessible to get on and off the boat (steep ramps but they pushed me) but the restrooms are not accessible (tiny and involving a step up to get in). The trip over was narrated with some interesting Seattle history, and they provided snacks on the upper deck (not accessible). There was also a bar on each deck.

Once I arrived, we ate, visited, played, fished… Blake Island is beautiful, and I got around with help. The terrain is uneven, mostly dry grass (which was pretty easy to wheel on) and a few gravel paths (which were not easy).

I had bought a new tent for the occasion, a Coleman Instant Tent, which was tall enough for me to wheel in and out of:

It worked great! Although it was large and heavy:

Dad’s tent on top – mine on bottom. 🙂

All in all, a pretty good camping trip. Pro’s: Family, beautiful site, gorgeous weather, close to Seattle, great tent. Con’s: Hard to get around independently, narrow “accessible” bathroom stall, no campfire allowed (due to Kitsap Co. burn ban), lots of people. The trip’s pics:

Bait was salami and salmon eggs!

Goodbye, summer!
